STARKVILLE, Miss . Mississippi State softball head coach Jay Miller announced two additional signees to his recruiting class Monday afternoon as infielder Katie Johnson (Birmingham, Ala./Vestavia Hills HS) and pitcher Sara Hickerson (Nashville, Tenn./John Overton HS) inked their names to national letters of intent to continue their playing careers with the Bulldogs.
Johnson and Miller are expected to contribute immediately to the Mississippi State lineup. The duo brings Miller's signing class to six strong after the Bulldogs inked a quartet of players during the early signing period.
Voted Most Valuable Player at Vestavia Hills Red and Blue Classic this past weekend, Johnson has helped lead the Rebels to a 27-5 record this season, hitting .455 with 16 extra-base hits (3 HR), 34 RBI and 29 runs scored. An all-state honorable mention selection in 2001 and an all-metro honoree in 2002, Katie will leave Vestavia Hills High School as the programıs all-time assists leader.
She was named the VHHS Freshman Female Athlete of the Year in 1998 following a standout athletic season in which she garnered Pizitz all-metro team honors in softball, as well as Pizitz MVP and all-metro volleyball honors. She was also decorated with the Lady Pirate award and received the Presidential Fitness awards.
Katie has achieved stints with a pair of travel ball organizations as well, including the Birmingham Vipers and the Silver Bullets. The daughter of Thom and Mary Johnson, Katie has three brothers Rocky, Ryan and Christopher. She currently maintains a 3.06 GPA at Vestavia High School and expects to major in Physical Education at MSU.
"Katie brings a strong bat with good power and she can play all of the infield positions," Miller said. "She has an oustanding arm, good range and she should challenge for a starting spot right away in the fall."
A product of the Club K Pitching School in Nashville, Hickerson has proven herself to be a threat at both the plate and inside the circle. She has recorded a 66-35 in her four-year prep career to go along with a 66-35 record and a 0.89 career ERA. She has worked 673.1 innings in 90 appearances, striking out 829 and surrendering just 86 earned runs. The owner of 30 shutouts in four seasons, Hickerson has also tallied four saves. She has also turned in a strikeout-to-walk ratio of better than 5-to-1 and has held opponents during her prep career to a paltry .187 batting average.
At the plate, Hickerson has tallied a .389 (148-for-380) batting average to go along with 48 extra-base hits and 104 RBI. She recorded a .389 on-base percentage and a .595 slugging percentage in her four-year career with Overton.
A member of both the Clearwater Bombers and Tennessee Firebirds travel ball teams, Hickerson has had a long history of travel ball success. In 2001, she helped lead the Elite to a spot at ASA Nationals for the third-straight season after helping her squad to a 17th place finish in 2000 and a 33rd place finish in 1999.
"Sara is one of the top pitchers and hitters in the state of Tennessee," Miller said. "She will help us on the mound as well as at the plate. She brings big-time power to our club and we look for her to contribute immediately."
The daughter of Earnie and Diane Hickerson of Nashville, Sara currently maintains a 3.5 overall GPA and is a member of the student council as well as the honors curriculum at Overton High School. She is expecting to major in Psychology at MSU.

"Tonight's game was intense and a wonderful spectacle for the fans," said Mississippi State head coach Neil McGuire. "Each team played with a great deal of passion, and the game could have gone either way. I admire Coach Hoppa as she always has her team well prepared and tonight I thought we did a very good job in dealing with their offensive threats.
"I am proud of, and happy for, our players who finally saw the fruits of all their labor this spring. This is the best team performance we have had in some time, and hopefully this will give us the boost we need to ready ourselves for the fall season."
Auburn got some early chances in the first half, using high pressure on set pieces to try and find a hole in the Bulldog defense, but the backline of MSU Kristen Benefield, Morgan McDonald, Emily Meyers and Karen Sandrik were unyielding and stifled each Tiger attempt at the nets. The Bulldogs got a pair of shots from Betty Ann Casey in first half action, but neither seriously threatening. Elke D'Hollander nearly broke the tie midway through the first period, but her 30-yard cannon shot was corraled by second team all-SEC goalkeeper Megan Rivera to keep the game tied at zero.
Suh broke the deadlock just minutes into the second stanza, outjumping the Auburn defense on a corner serve from Meghan Odom and drilling a header into the corner of the net for the 1-0 advantage. Auburn came within inches of netting the Equalizer with 20 minutes remaining, but Karen Sandrik hustled to clear a ball off the MSU endline and save the shutout. Auburn attempted to retaliate again shortly thereafter but, each time, was stifled by the MSU defense, further adding to the Tiger frustration.
With just less than 14 minutes remaining in the match (76:40), Sandrik played a brilliant through ball to Suh and, after outracing one player and outmuscling another, gave the Maroons an insurance goal with a rifle shot past Rivera.
"We must thank the City of Orange Beach for hosting this event," McGuire said. "Their facilities are first class, and they do a wonderful job of showcasing the sport of soccer. We look forward to the opportunity to return here for the fall 2003 SEC tournament."
The victory completed an impressive winning spring campaign for the Bulldogs. With seven spring games, State faced their toughest spring schedule ever. The maroons managed four shutouts, and surrendered just five goals. State will next be in action on Aug. 29 when the club travels to Memphis, Tenn., for a 7 p.m. contest against the Memphis Tigers to open the 2003 regular season.

Men's Tennis
STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State men's tennis standout Romain Ambert has been named to the 2003 all-Southeastern Conference men's tennis team, as released by the league office Wednesday. It marks his third appointment to the all-SEC squad in as many seasons.
A junior, Ambert represented State on the conference's first-team squad for the third season in a row. He is the first Bulldog ever to earn first-team honors in each of his first three seasons at State. A native of Toulouse, France, he is currently ranked 17th nationally in singles, having posted a 14-7 overall mark, 8-3 in SEC contests.
The all-American, named 2002's Intercollegiate Tennis Association Player of the Year, has compiled career records of 78-29 in singles and 52-34 in doubles. After just three seasons of play, he needs only four more singles victories to crack State's top 10 list in that category. He is 27 triumphs away from making the list for overall wins (singles and doubles combined).
"We are extremely proud of Romain for being named first-team, all-SEC," MSU head coach Sylvain Guichard said. "To be the first player in our history to do that in his first three seasons says a lot because we have had some great players who never did that."
Ambert's 2003 honor marks the 14th-consecutive season that State has had at least one student-athlete selected to the all-SEC men's tennis squad.

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. Mississippi State junior all-American Iyhia McMichael was one of 25 finalists named to the final watch list for the Amateur Softball Associationıs 2003 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award, the organization announced Wednesday.
The ASA, the national governing body of softball in the United States, presents the award which is considered the Heisman Trophy in women's collegiate softball and is the only national player of the year award. It is designed to recognize outstanding athletic achievement by female collegiate softball players across the country. The final list is comprised of 25 players that represent 19 colleges and nine different conferences.
McMichael is accompanied on the list by Georgia's Nicole Barber and Michelle Green, as well as Alabama's Jackie McClain. She is just one of seven juniors on the list of 25.
"This is a tremendous honor, not only for Iyhia, but also for Mississippi State," said Mississippi State head coach Jay Miller. "Obviously, it is well deserved and is something she has earned throughout the course of this season because, heading into it, she wasn't on anybody's watch list."
McMichael, who stretched her hitting streak out to a school record 25 games on a 2-for-3 tally in MSU's series opener with Mississippi in Oxford on Wednesday evening, is currently hitting .459 with 27 extra-base hits and 48 RBI. She has drawn 27 walks for the Maroon and White this season, scored 48 runs and currently carries a .895 slugging percentage and a .546 on-base percentage. In addition, she is a perfect 26-for-26 on stolen base attempts this season and has successfully swiped 34-straight dating back to last season.
The Nacogdoches, Texas, native is currently tied atop MSU's career list with 90 stolen bases and needs just one more home run this season to match the school's single season mark in that category. She is in the top five of 17 career lists at Mississippi State in only her third season with the Bulldogs.
The ASA's watch list of 25 will be reduced to 10 players on April 29 and three finalists will be announced May 13. The winner of the 2003 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Award will be announced May 21 at the opening ceremonies of the NCAA College World Series in Oklahoma City, Okla. The winner will be recognized and presented with the Player of the Year trophy during the ASA National Council Meeting in Orlando, Fla., in November.
A replica of the award will be placed in a permanent display in the ASA National Softball Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City, along with photos of the winner. An additional replica of the award will be presented to the player's academic institution.
UCLA catcher Stacey Nuveman was selected as the inaugural winner of the award after leading her Bruins to the Pac-10 title and a berth into the Women's College World Series.
The Amateur Softball Association, founded in 1933, is the National Governing Body of amateur softball in the United States and a member of the United States Olympic Committee. As the National Governing Body, the ASA is responsible for identifying, selecting and training male and female athletes to compete in World, Pan American and Olympic competitions. It is also responsible for promoting and growing the sport of softball across the country.

STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Just a day removed from capturing SEC Player of the Week honors for the second time in her career, Mississippi State centerfielder Iyhia McMichael grabbed a share of Louisville Slugger/NFCA National Player of the Week honors Tuesday afternoon, the organization announced.
McMichael becomes the first player in the history of the Mississippi State softball program to garner such laurels. The honor follows a standout week for the Nacogdoches, Texas, native in which she hit .611 (11-for-18) with eight walks, seven runs scored, eight RBI and was a perfect 8-for-8 on stolen base attempts.
McMichael helped lead the Maroon and White to its first series sweep of the campaign against Kentucky on Saturday and Sunday, as well as its first home victory over LSU since April 3, 1998. The 'Dogs salvaged its home series with the No. 11-ranked Tigers with a 6-2 victory in the series finale on Thursday evening.
She shares the award with current Texas and USA National Team pitcher Cat Osterman, who tied her career high for strikeouts in a game with 23 against Nebraska as the fifth-ranked Longhorns downed the Huskers 1-0 in 10 innings. It is the first tie for the distinguished national accolade since April 17, 2002, when Osterman and Fresno State's Jamie Southern shared the honor. McMichael is currently on a 21-game hitting streak, and has stolen 32 consecutive bases for the Bulldogs. She leads Mississippi State in 11 offensive categories, including batting average (.458), triples (5), home runs (10) and RBI (41). She needs just three stolen bases to eclipse MSU's career record currently held by four-time NFCA all-American Kellie Wilkerson.
