BATON ROUGE, La. Mississippi State University's Jamel Ashley (400m), LaChristopher Lewis (long jump) and Tiffany McWilliams (800m and 1500m) and the men's 4x400m relay team of Ashley, Arthur Davis, Keston Nelson and Lewis automatically qualified for the NCAA National Championships at the 2004 MidEast Regional Championships in Baton Rouge, La., on Saturday. Trey Hardee will also compete in the decathlon at the Championships, qualifying earlier in the season for the event.
The Bulldogs finished eighth overall with a total of 26 points, and the Lady Bulldogs scored 13 points, leaving them tied for 17th place.
"Tiffany had hurt her foot at Ole Miss and it has been bothering her," said head coach Al Schmidt. "So, we really did not turn her loose in the race. The Michigan runner that won the 1500m ran a good race and got a huge kick. We just used a different strategy to try and save Tiffany's foot. She was already automatically in the National Championships in the 1500m. All she had to do was run the race. She did have to run the finals of the 800m to get into the Championships though, but she could have been dead last and gotten in in both races. I take full blame for her losing the races. She had not been beaten all year, and I held her back and would not let her go. She hates to lose."
McWilliams finished second in the 1500m in 4:12.04 and fourth in the 800m in a time of 2:03.91, advancing to the National Championships in both events. Jennifer McPherson ran the 1500m in 4:32.25 for a ninth place showing.
"The men's 4x400m was also already in the National Championships because they are top three in the country," said Schmidt. "We just ran safely."
The men's 4x400m relay team of Ashley, Davis, Nelson and Lewis advanced to the NCAA Championships with their third place showing in the race with a time of 3:05.66.
"We had three guys in the 400m, and we, as a staff, have to now make a decision of who is going to be declared in what event at the Championships," said Schmidt. "Jennifer still has a shot to get in in the 1500m with the 4:20 she ran. We just have to make a decision of how were are going to work our sprint guys. And then whether to run Tiffany in both races or not."
Ashley, Lewis and Davis finished the 400m final in the same spots as the prelims, scoring 12 points for the Bulldogs. Ashley paced the squad in the finals of the 400m with a time of 45.62, taking second and qualifying for the NCAA National Championships. Lewis recorded a 46.10 for sixth, and Davis took eighth in 46.94.
JD Erickson took eighth in the discus with his mark of 172-10, a season high. Travis McKay ran a 10:18.44 in the 3000m steeplechase.
Next, MSU travels to Austin, Texas, for the NCAA National Championships on June 9-12.

Men's Tennis
TULSA, Okla. - Mississippi State's Romain Ambert dropped his opening-round match in the 2004 NCAA Singles Championship here Wednesday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the University of Tulsa campus, falling to Mat Cloer of Florida State.
After gaining a 4-1 lead in the first set, Ambert, ranked 37th nationally, ultimately dropped that first frame to the 27th-ranked Cloer 7-5. In the second set, the two players traded several service breaks that resulted in a 3-3 tie. But Cloer, the Atlantic Coast Conference's Player of the Year, would claim the final three games of the match to post a 7-5, 6-3 victory over the MSU senior.
The loss marked the end of one of the best careers in MSU tennis history. Ambert was a a two-time, all-American and four-time, all-Southeastern Conference selection. He was ranked as high as No. 3 nationally in singles during his career, and was in the top 10 a good portion of his time as a Bulldog. He finished up his four seasons in Starkville 98-49 overall in singles while facing the nation's top competition in many of those contests. He stands sixth all-time at MSU when combining singles and doubles victories, notching 167 total wins.
A native of Toulouse, France, Ambert earned his fourth career appointment to the NCAA singles field this year, making him only the second Bulldog netter ever to qualify for the NCAA Singles Championship four times. The other was all-American Matthieu Ballay, who accomplished the feat from 1996-99. He was named the ITA National Player to Watch in 2002 and earned two ITA regional sportsmanship awards in 2003. He is also an ITA Scholar Athlete.

McMichael, the only two-time SEC Softball Athlete of the Year in the history of the league, joined Georgia first baseman Kim Wendland and Tennessee pitcher Monica Abbott on the first team, with six other SEC players being named a part of the second or third team. It marked the third consecutive career all-American laurel for the outgoing senior after capturing Easton all-American accolades as a sophomore.
One of just two players to play and start all 65 games for the Maroon and White in 2004, McMichael turned in an SEC record .475 (87-for-183) batting average while matching the league record for walks (51). Having turned in 36 extra-base hits, including 10 home runs, McMichael also collected school record marks in slugging percentage (.836), on-base percentage (.595), stolen bases (41) and runs scored (83). She concluded the campaign possessing the nation's second-best batting clip while leading the nation in runs per game (1.28).
Having made the trip to Oklahoma City, Okla., this week as one of three finalists for the ASA/USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award, McMichael boarded a plane Thursday morning to head to Akron, Ohio, where she will undergo physicals, as well as a short preseason practice session. Cal starter Kelly Anderson did not record an out before exiting the first, surrendering a run on a pair of walks and one hit. Kristin Thorson (25-3) picked up the win for the Golden Bears, striking out five and allowing just one hit and one walk in picking up her second victory in as many days at the NCAA Region 5 Tournament.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Mississippi State sent a pair of players to first team all-SEC accolades, and rookie Hayle Guess became the first Bulldog to be named to the SEC all-freshman squad, as the Southeastern Conference awards were announced at opening ceremonies of the 2004 SEC Softball Tournament Wednesday evening at Coleman Coliseum in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Senior all-American Iyhia McMichael earned her third consecutive bid to the first team, while fellow senior Kate Jaspers earned her first all-conference award as a member of the first team as well. In their first year as official conference awards, Guess was named to the 12-member all-freshman team and Jaspers collected co-Scholar Athlete of the Year laurels. Starkville native Meagan O'Nan rounded out the Mississippi State awards as she was named to the 11-member SEC Softball Good Works Team.
With the honors, McMichael and Jaspers became the first Bulldog duo to be named first team all-SEC since McMichael and former MSU all-American Kellie Wilkerson were decorated with the same laurels in 2001. McMichael became the first repeat winner of the SEC Player of the Year award after becoming the first junior to garner the award last year.
Having finished the season with a .481 batting clip against SEC foes, McMichael reached base safely (hit or walk) in 28 of 29 SEC outings this season. She led the SEC in seven offensive categories and ranked second or third in two others. Her Player of the Year award and first team all-SEC nod comes just more than 24 hours after being named as a top three finalist for USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year honors.
Jaspers finished the season hitting .356 against conference foes with 22 RBI and 19 runs scored. She ranked in the top 10 of five offensive categories, and led the league in sacrifice bunts with 11. In the classroom, Jaspers was equally as impressive, finishing out her academic career at MSU with a cumulative 4.0 GPA one of just five Bulldog athletes in school history to accomplish that feat.
Guess, a Moss Point native, played and started all 29 conference games for the Bulldogs this season and closed out the campaign with 14 hits inside the conference, three RBI and five runs scored. Her solo home run in Stateıs series finale with then-No. 10 Alabama capped off a six-run first inning that helped the Bulldogs clinch its series with the Crimson Tide for the first time in school history.
A regular volunteer in the Starkville community, O'Nan is a member of Mississippi State's community service organization, the M-Club. As a member of the leadership team of MSU's Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), Meagan has helped organize the Project Angel Tree service for FCA over the past two years.

STARKVILLE, Miss. Mississippi State University associate head track and field coach Steve Dudley announced Monday the signing of Newburgh Free Academy's Elzie Coleman to a national letter-of-intent to compete for the Bulldogs this fall.
"Signing Elzie Coleman caps off an unbelievable recruiting class for this year's Mississippi State men's track and field team," said Dudley. "Elzie is the US record holder in the indoor 400m, making him the top long sprinter in the country. But the biggest thing that we get from Elzie is his leadership, attitude and his willingness to be the best."
Coleman is the current National High School Indoor Record holder in the 400m dash with a time of 45.92 in the event. He ran the time at the 2004 Simplot Games in February in Pocatello, Idaho, breaking his own senior record, the meet record and the U.S. record that he set earlier in the season. Not only is he ranked first in the nation in the 400m, Coleman is also the top athlete in the 300m (33.28) and 600m (1:20.03) and ranked 22nd in the 200m (22.11). In outdoors, he is ranked second in the 400m with a 46.52 and 17th in the 200m with a time of 21.49.
"My goals at Mississippi State are to break the NCAA 400m dash record and to go 2:59 as a team in the 4x400m relay," said Coleman. "I just really want to go after some national records. I decided to come to MSU because of my visit and because the program is building. I knew that I needed to pick a college with some young guys, so that we could be together for the next four years. And the big reason was Coach Dudley. He is a great guy, and I'm coming to MSU because of him."
Coleman has finished first in all races during his senior campaign except for the outdoor 400m at the Mobile Meet of Champions in early April to the individual that is ranked first in the nation. Undefeated in his final indoor season, he recorded his 300m time of 33.28 in his only race of the season, moving him to third on the national all-time list. All three races he ran in the indoor 400m dash were faster that the National Record prior to the start of the season and his 600m time of 1:20.03 moved him to eighth on the national all-time list.
The three-year letterwinner was honored as the 2004 High School Indoor Track Athlete of the Year by Track and Field News. In addition to track, Coleman was a running back and wide receiver on the football team.
STARKVILLE, Miss. Mississippi State University head track and field coach Al Schmidt announced Monday the signing of Coldwater High School's Angelica Phillips to a national letter-of-intent to compete for the Lady Bulldogs beginning in 2004. Phillips is the sister of MSU's all-American LaChristopher Lewis.
"We are real happy that Angelica is joining us," said Schmidt. "Her brother has been an all-American here and a great performer. She will be a wonderful addition to our jumps crew and will add versatility to our relay teams."
At the 2004 Mississippi High School 2A State Championships, Phillips ran the anchor leg of the 4x400m relay team that won its fifth straight state championship since Phillips has been on the team. She began competing on the high school team as a seventh grader. She also finished fifth in the 300m hurdles and was a member of the 4x200m relay team that took fourth.
"I am glad to be teamed up again with my brother once more before he graduates," said Phillips. "I have wanted to attend State since my brother began competing there. Above all, I want to be a successful student."
As a junior, Phillips took second at the State Championships in the 300m hurdles and the triple jump. In 2002, the CHS's girl's track team won the state title. Phillips contributed with runner-up finishes in the 300m hurdles and the triple jump. Her 4x100m team won the state title and the 4x200m team finished in second.
Phillips took home three state championships in 2001, sweeping the girl's relays with wins in the 4x100m, 4x200m and 4x400m. As an eighth grader on the high school team, she won her first team state championship and relay championships with wins in the 4x200m and 4x400m relays. She took second in the 4x100m relay at the meet.
She has received all-State track honors five years of her high school career. She was named Coldwater's 2003 Best All Around Runner and was honored with the Heart of a Champion Award. She also earned the 2002 All-Purpose Award and the 1999 Most Improved Runner Award.
In addition to track, she was a member of the Lady Cougar basketball team that finished runner-up at the state championships in 2003 and 2004. Phillips served as captain her senior season and was named all-State twice during her career. She also received all-District honors in softball.
Currently ranked fourth among her classmates, Phillips was a member of the Beta Club, the honor roll and the 2003 National Society of High School Scholars. She was recognized in Who's Who Among High School Scholars and received the U.S. Achievement Academy Award and the U.S. Army Reserve Award.
Phillips will pursue a career in pre-med at Mississippi State.

Miller, who recorded her fifth consecutive victory with a one-hit shutout of the Yellow Jackets, is one of just five MSU pitchers to garner SEC Pitcher of the Week honors. The accomplishment also marked just the second time in school history that the Maroon and White have had a trio of SEC weekly award winners (2000) and the fourth consecutive season that the Bulldogs have had at least one conference player and pitcher of the week accolade.
Miller is 10-8 on the season with a team-low 1.99 ERA and has held opponents to a .255 batting average in 112.1 innings of work. She possesses a strikeout-to-walk ratio of nearly 3-to-1 and has allowed the fewest walks per seven innings (1.17) on State's four-armed staff.
Miller has tallied four complete games during her current five-game winning streak and has allowed just four earned runs in 31 innings of work for an ERA of 0.90. In that same time span, she has allowed opponents to hit a miniscule .131 against her and has tallied two solo shutouts and one combined shutout.

Men's Tennis
STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State's men's tennis team learned Wednesday afternoon that it will compete in the first round of the 64-team 2004 NCAA Championship Friday, May 14, in Charlottesville, Va. State's first-round NCAA site, which will be one of 16 nationally, will be hosted by the University of Virginia. Wednesday's selection marks the Bulldogs' 14th-consecutive appointment to the NCAA Team Championship field, one of only seven schools (Florida, Georgia, MSU, Southern Cal, Stanford, TCU and
UCLA) in the nation that have earned that distinction.
MSU (8-13), currently ranked 29th nationally, will meet 42nd-ranked Wake Forest (11-10), next Friday at the Sheridan Snyder Tennis Center on the UVA campus at 10 a.m. ET. If State wins that contest, the Bulldogs would advance to play the winner between 10th-ranked host Virginia (who is the country's No. 6 seed overall) and American University on Saturday, May 15, at 1 p.m. ET in the second round. The Saturday contest would be for a spot in the NCAA Team Championship's round of 16, which will be held May 22-25 in Tulsa, Okla.
The Bulldogs and Demon Deacons have met in men's tennis on only four previously recorded occasions, with State leading 3-1, and have not clashed since the 1991 season. That year, MSU took a 6-2 decision over WFU in the first round of the Miami Quad in Miami, Fla. The teams also split decisions in Starkville in 1972 and 1973, and MSU claimed a 5-1 victory in a neutral site affair in Knoxville, Tenn., in 1990.
The Southeastern Conference's power was once again very evident in the NCAA field this season, with all 12 of the league's teams earning bids to the 64-team field for the third time in the last four years.
The selections for the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships, to be played May 26-31 in Tulsa, will be released Thursday. Senior Bulldog Romain Ambert, currently ranked 37th nationally, is expected to earn his fourth and final bid to the 64-player singles field. The Toulouse, France, native, injured for much of this spring, is a two-time, all-American and four-time, all-SEC choice.
