Tennis
STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State's men's and women's tennis teams have been awarded national honors on both the team and individual levels by
the Intercollegiate Tennis Association for the 2003-04 season, as the ITA announced its yearly academic awards Monday.
Both the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs earned the ITA's All-Academic Team Award, which is bestowed upon teams that record a cumulative 3.20 grade point average or higher for the year. State's men's roster notched a very impressive 3.55 team GPA in earning the ITA's team award for the fifth straight year. The Lady Bulldogs posted an excellent 3.39 mark to claim the laurel for the eighth consecutive season. For the second straight year, Mississippi State was the only school in the Southeastern Conference to have both its men's and women's squads earn the team award.
On the individual level, four of State's men's tennis student-athletes, and three women, earned the ITA Scholar-Athlete Award. To qualify, a player must hold a 3.5 GPA for the year, be a varsity letterwinner, and have been enrolled at least two semesters at their present school.
Bulldog Luiz Carvalho, with a 3.59 GPA in journalism/broadcasting, earned his second career appointment. Joining the senior-to-be Carvalho were Bulldogs Matt Armstrong, Florent Girod and Jose-Carlos Pinto, who were all first-time honorees for the award. The departed senior Armstrong notched a 3.64 grade point in his double major of banking & finance/real estate. Girod, who will be a junior for MSU in 2004-05, had a flawless 4.00 GPA in journalism. A fifth place finish at the Canada Cup was highlighted by a trio of wins over Olympic competitors. Having opened with a 3-0 blanking of Chinese Taipei, the Elite suffered their first loss of the summer at the hands of Japan Elite before rattling off five-straight victories including a mercy rule victory over New Zealand.
Having eliminated Canada from the tournament with a 3-2 triumph in its first game of double elimination bracket play, Australia avenged last year's championship game loss with a 1-0 nail biter, before the USA split a pair of games with China, the latter of which eliminated the Elite squad.
"We only had two practices before we went up to Canada and it was tough to really gel together as a team and, in addition, they were all young kids," Miller said. "For most of them, it was their first experience with USA Softball. I thought that they matured very well over the two weeks that we were up in Canada. We just seemed to get better and better.
"The Canada Cup was a great experience for them because we played against a lot of Olympic teams up there that will be playing in Athens. We were able to get some good competition from some of our young players that will help us down the road in 2008 and 2012."
Miller, who has now been a member of the USA coaching staff for eight years, has coached the USA Elite team to phenomenal success over the past three seasons, including gold medal honors at the 2003 Canada Cup.
"Everything starts over again next year," Miller said. "The plan right now is to have this group represent the United States at the World University Games in October and then there will be a USA Softball National Team Camp in mid-January to pick two teams for next summer. That will probably include all of our olympians and a lot of the pro league players, as well as all of these players. It will be a big group in January, but it will put these people in position to get selected for the national team going into the 2008 Bejing games."

Women's Golf
STARKVILLE, Miss. Mississippi State University's Beth Irwin, Amanda Mathis and Catalina Olarte were named to the 2004 National Golf Coaches
Association's all-American Scholar Team, released by the NGCA on Wednesday. The Division I, II and IIII NGCA selected 318 women's collegiate golfers for
the prestigious honor.
The criteria for selection to the all-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent in all of college athletics. The minimum cumulative grade point average is 3.50, and student-athletes must have competed in at least 50% of the college's regularly scheduled competitive rounds during the year.
"I was proud to have three players earn a spot on the NGCA All-American Scholar Team," said head coach Christi Sanders. "It takes a great deal of time, work ethic and dedication to be successful in competition and in the classroom. When we travel, the players study on van rides, on planes and in hotel rooms. I give credit to these young ladies, they manage their time wisely, and they are perfect examples of a true student-athlete."
Irwin, a native of Germantown, Tenn., received the honor for the third time in her career. The marketing major holds a 3.80 grade point average entering her senior season. A native of Picayune, Miss., Mathis was named to the team as a freshman with a 3.90 grade point average in communications.
A computer engineering major, Olarte appeared on the team for the second time in her career with a 3.97 grade point average. The Bogota, Columbia, native competed in her final season in Maroon and White this past year.
Of the 197 athletes selected from Division I schools, 23 Southeastern Conference golfers received the honor.
